Double Delay

Explination: This shooting drill is an excellent way to illustrate an attack of the offensive zone. Ask players to imagine attack in waves with the first driving player the first wave, the second player to gain the zone the second wave of attack, and the last man the third wave. This drill also emphasizes good skating technique, passing, using the ice (width & depth), and team play. The variation tests the goalie and makes players think...using creativity. the first player leaves the front of the line carrying a puck he skates wide cutting around cone. This player drives low, then tight turns to boards with puck. He then passes to the second player who has performed a timed skate. This player drives towards net then tight turns with puck passing to the third man who has left just after the second man skating in a controlled manner. The third man shoots from slot.

Cues: First man drives low with puck, second and third man controlled timed skate, quality passes on tape, after pass move to net for rebound and finish.

Coaches may try this one from two sides (only one is diagramed) and both ends.

Variation: Coaches may wnat to start with a 2vs0 with one delay first then progress to the 3vs0 double delay. For added fun disperse pucks in corners, and ask first two players to choose whether they shoot or delay and pass. If they shoot they retrieve a puck turn and feed next man. This player then may also decide to shoot or pass.
